Chattanooga Police Deputy Chief David Roddy urged residents of the West Missippi Avenue area to be on alert after he confirmed a sexual assault on a 69-year-old runner occurred Monday at 7:30 a.m.

The suspect was described as a 5'8" or 5'9" African American male with a flat-top style haircut. He was said to be wearing white or khaki shorts and a dark-colored button-up shirt.

Deputy Chief Roddy said, "Public safety is our number one priority."

He also said that the investigation is ongoing. Because of this, police are not yet releasing further suspect details.

The incident is believed to be isolated. Extra patrol cars and officers have been assigned to the area.

He said, "Our officers are working hard to apprehend the suspect."

Deputy Chief Roddy encouraged not just residents of the area, but all runners to be extremely aware of their surroundings.

He suggested running with a friend if possible and to carry a cell phone.

However, he emphasized, "It is never the victim's fault."
