Lee University’s Language and Literature Department honored Dr. Sabord Woods as its 2015 Distinguished Alumnus at a department breakfast during Homecoming festivities.

“Dr. Sabord Woods graduated from Lee and built upon his love of English, earning a PhD in English and modeling a lifelong love of learning which impacted and inspired students and colleagues at his alma mater for 40 years,” said Dr. Jean Eledge, chair of the Department of Language and Literature.

“His life exemplifies to all who know him the authentic integration of scholarship, faith and service to Christ. Our department is pleased to honor him as our Distinguished Alumnus Award recipient for 2015.”

Dr. Woods graduated from Lee College in 1959, and later completed degrees from Georgia Southern College and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He returned to Lee in 1966 and for the next four decades taught courses in English composition, British literature, Shakespeare, and in the Master of Liberal Arts program. He also earned a master’s degree in Christian Ministries from the Church of God Theological Seminary in order to design and prepare for the original English capstone faith-integration course.

Dr. Woods, a native of South Georgia, served as a high school English teacher and department chair at Wayne County High School, then as a pastor for several years before returning to Lee. He retired in 2007, and currently teaches and plays piano for services at Jesup Church of God. He also writes lesson commentaries for Pathway Press.
