Lee University’s Dr. John Hisey has written a research article which was published by Southwestern Naturalist. The article focused on the movements of raccoons.

The article covers the genetic and migration patterns of captured raccoons across varied landscapes in western Tennessee. Dr. Hisey found that distance traveled was greater in males, older adult raccoons, and during dry years. He conducted his work in the path of the spreading rabies epidemic. According to Dr. Hisey, his conclusions may influence the cost and control measures of the spread of the rabies disease in eastern North America.

“This study was aided by many students and faculty members and should provide critical information on optimal placing and timing of control measures for pest raccoons and raccoon rabies which have cost tens of billions of dollars in eastern North America,” said Dr. Hisey.

Dr. Hisey is an associate professor of biology in the Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Lee. He earned his doctorate from the University of Memphis, a master’s from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s from the University of Washington.

Before coming to Lee, Dr. Hisey taught college courses for 10 years. Seven of those years were spent in China as a professor and guest lecturer to several national and provincial institutions. He received the Jilin Province Model Teacher Award in 1990 and 1991.

Dr. Hisey teaches courses such as comparative vertebrae anatomy, principles of biology, research, human and plant biology, environmental science, and principles of ecology at Lee. Since 1998, Dr. Hisey and his Lee student researchers have published more than 20 abstracts and authored or co-authored nearly 50 research presentations at professional meetings.

Dr. Hisey and his wife, Lauren, have one son, Nathaniel.
