Daniel Spann Joins Barge Waggoner Sumner And Cannon

Daniel Spann, PE, PTOE, has joined Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon, Inc. as director of Transportation Services. His responsibilities will be to organize, strengthen, and grow Barge Waggoner’s transportation presence and capabilities. 

Mr. Spann has 18 years of experience in the fields of traffic engineering and transportation planning, roadway design, and commercial site design. His expertise includes roundabout design, specifically noting the award-winning roundabout on the Middle Tennessee State University campus. 

Mr. Spann graduated from Tennessee Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, as well as a licensed Professional Traffic Operations Engineer.  

Prior to joining Barge Waggoner, Mr. Spann served as project manager at RPM Transportation Consultants. There he led the design group and managed numerous traffic analysis and design projects including the analysis and design of roadways, intersections, traffic signals,  bicycle and pedestrian facilities, modern roundabouts,  traffic circulation and safety, network signal timing and synchronization, and highway railroad crossings.   

A frequent presenter at technical conferences, Mr. Spann is the current chair of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Standing Committee on Roundabouts and serves on the Roundabout Committee Paper Review of the Transportation Research Board where he also serves as session moderator. He is president-elect of the Nashville Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers and is a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers. He serves on the Transportation Committee for the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee, is a member of the Roundabout Peer to Peer Program for the Federal Highway Administration, and is an adjunct instructor for Northwestern University Center for Public Safety.

Mr. Spann’s personal activities include service as board member for Ride for Reading, a Nashville area non-profit organization, as well as Tennessee delegate to the National Bike Summit in Washington, DC. He is an active member of the National Mountain Bike Patrol for the Middle Tennessee chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association, and is also a member of the Brentwood Morning Rotary Club.
