Faculty and staff at Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy started the new school year with new laptops thanks to a grant from UNUM.
The Young Women’s Leadership Academy Foundation, the fundraising arm for CGLA, recognized a critical need at CGLA to upgrade the computers for school employees who were working on devices that were six years old. UNUM awarded YWLAF a one-year grant for CGLA’s technology program allowing the school to purchase 40 new Acer TravelMate P276 notebooks to utilize in CGLA’S instructional modeland 1:1 learning environment in the classroom.
“The outdated laptops posed challenges for teachers in interfacing with PowerSchool — the
district system for tracking attendance, grades, and other academic indicators,” said Dr. Elaine
Swafford, CGLA executive director. “The older devices also challenged support of CGLA’s
STEAM-based (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) environment.”
Officials said, "YWLAF and CGLA are grateful for the partnership with UNUM which has played an
instrumental role in the school’s success by supporting renovation and expansion efforts at
CGLA and the creation of a Community Innovation Lab." The Community Innovation Lab is
being used as CGLA’s Lecture Hall and serves as a hub of activity for classes, faculty
workshops, parent meetings and community events.
