- Senior Hannah Wyatt (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) buried the game winner in Chattanooga’s 1-0 win over Western Carolina on UTC’s Senior Day Sunday afternoon at Finley Stadium in Southern Conference women’s soccer action. The Mocs improve to 6-8-2 overall and 4-2-1 in conference play. The Catamounts fall to 6-10 on the year and 3-4 against the league.
“Hannah hasn’t played up front for us all year,” Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. “We had a forward pick up an injury yesterday and thought we needed relief up front.
That’s a position she played when she was younger.
“Delighted for her because she’s been through a lot with injuries.”
Wyatt’s goal came just before halftime. Freshman Hannah Torbett (Johnson City, Tenn.) fed her the ball from the left side to the middle just outside the 18-yard box. Wyatt, a fifth-year senior, turned on the ball and, with her left foot, bent it into the top left corner of the net just out of the reach of WCU’s keeper.
The Mocs edged the Catamounts on shots 11-10 with a 5-4 shots on goal advantage. Freshman Anna Moore (Bristol, Tenn.) had a team-best three shots with two on goal and junior Ellie Myrick (Knoxville, Tenn.) had two shots on the day. Senior keeper Katie Emig (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up her fourth win this season making four saves for her third shutout.
“It was a good team win,” McKinney said. “We have 29 players on the squad and they all contribute every single day in training.”
Chattanooga had 11 corner kicks in the match, not allowing the Catamounts a single one. Western Carolina’s keeper Carly Tinstman had four saves in the match, stopping a couple of 1v1 attemtps.
The Mocs moved up to a tie with ETSU for fourth and will close out the regular season next weekend at VMI on Friday and UNCG on Sunday.
