  • Thursday, October 27, 2016
The Covenant volleyball team captured its second straight USA South division regular season championship after defeating Agnes Scott 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-15) on Wednesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

Covenant (17-12, 11-3 USA South) had already clinched the No. 1 seed from the West in next week's USA South Tournament after a victory over Maryville last week. The regular season title is the second straight overall and the third in the last five seasons going back to 2012.

The Lady Scots were led by Ginny Moore's 10 kills, while Jessica Seehorn had eight and Morgan Opgenorth six in the victory.
Schuyler Moore added 31 assists, five kills, three aces and five digs. Hannah Stewart led the defense with 17 digs on the night.

Covenant broke away from Agnes Scott (12-14, 4-10 USA South) midway through the first set by going on a 9-2 scoring run to go ahead 18-9 after a combined block from Allie Jakes and Schuyler Moore. A Hannah Harris solo block ended the set and gave Covenant a 1-0 match lead.

In the second, the visiting Scotties grabbed a 7-2 lead in the early going but Covenant rallied back with a 9-1 run, capped by an Emily Moore ace, to take an 11-8 lead. Covenant would go on one more big run over the final points to snap a 15-15 tie and end the frame on a Ginny Moore kill.

Covenant never trailed in the third set and took a 10-point lead at 20-10 after an Agnes Scott attack error. Ginny Moore's 10th kill of the night sealed the sweep and the conference regular season title for the Lady Scots.

The Lady Scots dominated on the attack with a 41-19 edge in total kills and limiting Agnes Scott to an .044 hitting percentage. Covenant also had 16 service aces, compared to the Scotties' three.

Agnes Scott received seven kills and eight digs from Paige Heck. Anna Tomkins had 14 assists and Bella Kammerer totaled 18 digs.
