TechTown To Host A Free Hour Of Code Event Saturday

  • Monday, December 5, 2016

The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching over 100 million students in over 180 countries. The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with one-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide, officials said.

The Hour of Code takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (Dec. 9, 1906).  The 2016 Computer Science Education Week will be December 5-11.

"Computer science is foundational. Every 21st-century student should have the opportunity to learn how to create technology. Computer science is changing every industry on the planet. The basics of computer science also help nurture creativity and problem- solving skills, and prepare students for any future career," officials said.

TechTown will host a free Hour of Code event on Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.  No prior experience in coding is required.  All ages (seven years and older) are invited to attend, but registration is required.
