Covenant baseball freshman Matt Reitz has been named the USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 10, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
It is the second time this year Reitz has earned the award after receiving the honor on Feb. 29.
The freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., made the start and went seven strong innings in Covenant's 5-2 victory over Piedmont on Thursday. Reitz allowed two runs on three hits with six strikeouts in his outing as he picked up his second win of the year. At one point in the game, Reitz retired 18 of 19 Piedmont batters.
On the year, Reitz is 2-5 with a save and a 5.02 ERA in 57.1 innings pitched.
Covenant softball sophomore Shannon Schmitt has been named the USA South Player of the Week for the period ending April 10, announced the conference on Monday afternoon.
Schmitt becomes the first Covenant softball athlete to earn a weekly honor from the conference in 2016.
The sophomore from Clermont, Fla., went a combined 10-for-16 (.625) with a 1.000 slugging percentage, a home run, seven RBIs, four runs scored, three doubles and one walk as Covenant posted a 3-3 record last week. In two losses to nationally-ranked Birmingham Southern, Schmitt was a combined 1-for-4. In a doubleheader sweep of USA South foe LaGrange, Schmitt was a combined 4-for-6 with two runs scored and one double. Finally, in a doubleheader split with USA South member Huntingdon, Schmitt was a combined 5-for-6 with a home run, seven RBIs, three runs scored and one double.
On the year, Schmitt leads the team in hitting at .412 to go with two home runs and 25 RBIs.
