Senator David Perdue released the following statement after supporting an amendment to responsibly fund Zika research by redirecting funding from other programs to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and several of our nation’s leading research facilities:
“Zika is a serious public health risk facing the U.S. right now and it is essential that we address it responsibly. In my home state of Georgia, some of our country’s leading researchers located at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working to help stop the spread of the Zika virus.
After carefully examining the federal budget, I voted today to responsibly allocate federal funds to combat Zika and protect our communities, while not adding to the national debt.”
Senator Perdue supported the fiscally responsible and fully paid for amendment, however, only the unfunded version passed the Senate.
