Dr. David Holsinger, noted composer and professor of music at Lee University, has designated the Lee Music Resource Center as the home for his compositional archives.
Dr. Holsinger’s compositional career spans over 50 years, and his compositions for wind ensemble and chamber ensembles include well over 100 pieces that are performed on a regular basis by ensembles in high schools, on college campuses, and in professional music organizations. His compositions have won four national competitions, including a two-time American Band Association Ostwald Award. His works have also been finalists in the National Band Association and Sudler competitions.
Dr. Holsinger joined the Lee University School of Music faculty in 1999, where he teaches conducting and composing. During the past 12 years, he has also served as visiting composer in residence at 11 American colleges and universities and has held the Acuff Chair of Excellence in the Creative Arts at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn.
He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Kansas, his master’s from Central Missouri State University, and his bachelor’s from Central Methodist College.
“For a composer of David Holsinger’s caliber, the decision on where to deposit your compositional archives is a major one,” said Dr. William Green, dean of Lee’s School of Music. “Lee University is honored to be the recipient of this wonderful collection. For many years to come researchers, educators, and students will visit our campus to study the works of Holsinger and how his compositional output has impacted the greater world of wind band literature.”
Dr. Holsinger’s collection has been established with a donation of all published works but will eventually contain compositional sketches and other historical items that will be valuable for music historians and those interested in the development of wind band music.
