Jack Matthews
Jack Washington Matthews, Jr., 89, a native of Bridgeport, Alabama, and longtime Hixson resident, went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2017.
He retired from DuPont after 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alfred, David, Clyde, Hershel, Willard, Jasper (Jappi), and Harold Matthews, and sister, Pearl Turner.
Survivors include his brother, Hubert Matthews of Jacksonville, Al.; sister, Mary Ruth Knopp, of Bridgeport, Al.; son, Dennis Matthews and his wife, Maria, of Chattanooga; daughter, Vicki Walker of Odenville, Al.; grandsons, Rodney Walker and his wife, Amy, of Bryant, Al., and Troy Allan Walker and his wife, Linda, of Lexington, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Oliva, Cameron, Morgan, Eden Walker, and numerous devoted nieces and nephews who supported him throughout his illness.
A longtime member of City Church of Chattanooga, Jack was a regular attendee and active in his Small Group. He enjoyed watching Alabama football, walking at the greenway, cutting grass, and raking leaves.
Visitation will be at City Church of Chattanooga, 7122 Lee Highway, from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, and from 12-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Dr. Mike Chapman will conduct the service at 1 p.m. at City Church. Interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
