Mickey Johnson died early Monday morning, July 17, 2017.

Mickey was born in Chattanooga and was part of the first graduating class of East Ridge High School. He proudly served our country in the U. S. Air Force. He graduated from Tennessee Temple University, earned a Master of Arts from Grace Theological Seminary, and a Doctorate of Religious Education from Baptist Bible Theological Seminary. While in the military, his life changed forever as he accepted the Lord as his personal Savior at the age of 21. From that moment on, for 50+ years, he faithfully served his precious Lord. For 49 years, he and his wife Cookie, served as missionaries. He traveled to more than 26 countries, sharing the love of Jesus worldwide. Mickey planted churches in Germany, smuggled Bibles into the former East Germany, and was the first missionary to print and carry Bibles into Albania after the fall of the Iron Curtain. In more recent years, he began Project 61-3 Ministries which offers free new clothing to missionaries to distribute to those in need. Project 61-3’s name comes from Mickey’s life verse, Isaiah 61:3, “That He might be glorified.”

Mickey made an impact on all he met and is known for having an enthusiastic personality and love for the Lord. Thank you, Lord, for giving us the best husband, father, father-in-law, Opa, son, uncle, teacher, mentor, and friend. Those of us who know and loved him were greatly blessed that he was in our lives. He will be missed more than we can ever say! Thank you that he fought a good fight and that he finished well!

Mickey is survived by his best friend and wife of over 49 years, Cookie Campbell Johnson; his favorite children, Rachel Johnson, Robin (Billy) Worley, Mikki (Punkin) Pelfrey, Michael (Hannah) Johnson; his pride and joy, grandchildren; Heidi, Micah, and Noah Worley, P.J. Pelfrey, and Mia Johnson; his favorite additional family members Linda Pate and Julie Batycki; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Huel Lafayette and Dolores Johnson; his brothers, Buster Johnson and Ronny Johnson; his sister Anita Vick and her husband Charles.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, at Lupton Drive Baptist Church with Bro. Michael Johnson, Bro. Miguel Castro, Rev. Dustin Taylor, and Rev. Jon DeRusha officiating.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 4-7 p.m. and Saturday from 12-1 p.m. at Lupton Drive Baptist Church.
