Lee Golfers 14th At Copperhead Championship

  • Tuesday, October 16, 2018
Thanks to another solid round from junior Scott Odell the Flames moved up two spots in Tuesday's final round to finish 14th at the Copperhead Championship from the Innisbrook Resort.  The event was hosted by the University of West Florida.

Odell carded an even par 71 in his final round and finished the 54-hole event with a 2-over par 215 total and a tie for 15th for the tournament, which was loaded with 11 teams ranked in the latest GCAA Top 25 poll. Sophomore Connor Pollman pitched in a 73 in his final round while Dylan Lillard posted a 75.
Freshmen Dustin DeMersseman (75) and Brock Nixon (83) rounded out the Lee scores.

"Scott had a solid tournament this week, he really did a lot of good things, and was a bright spot for us," said head coach John Maupin. "It was a disappointing week for our team. This was a stacked field, and this is the kind of finish you can expect if all five guys aren't on their game. I would say scoring on and around the greens gave us the most trouble this week. We hit a decent amount of greens but converted very few birdie opportunities."

Barry University showcased why it is the top ranked team in all of NCAA D2 as it ran away with the team title.  After posting low rounds of 274 and 280 on Monday the Bucs followed that up with Tuesday's low round of 280 for a 834 total and 24 shot win over host and seventh-ranked West Florida. Unranked Queens Univ. of Charlotte finished with an impressive third place showing while No. 6 Florida Tech and Georgia Southwestern rounded out the top five.

West Florida's Christian Bosso shot his third straight round in red-figures with a 3-under 68 on Tuesday to capture medalist honors with a 10-under par .

The event was staged at the Innisbrook Resort –Copperhead Course and was playing 7,209 yards.

"The biggest challenge with a finish like this is that we don't accept it, that we don't start becoming ok with losing like this," concluded Maupin. "I'm anxious to see how hungry our guys are in practice this week and in preparation for our next one."

The Flames will get a chance to bounce back rather quickly as they will head to Georgia to play in their final Fall Event of the year. Lee will participate in the Matt Dyas Invitational from Carrollton, Ga. next Monday and Tuesday.
