Lee Men Fall To UAH, Women Win

  • Saturday, October 20, 2018

The Alabama Huntsville Chargers tallied only one shot on goal but they made the most of it in handing the Lee men's soccer team a 1-0 loss on Friday evening.

Rafa Moreno headed in the lone goal of the match off a corner kick from Vicente Arratia in the 76th minute to give the Chargers the victory.

The Flames had some chances but could not find the elusive goal. Lee outshot the home team 11-9, including holding a 7-3 advantage in the second half.

Lee Keeper Daniel Hrenko suffered the loss in net. UAH goalie Myles Fullen registered two saves in the winning effort.

Palle Jespersen, fresh off scoring two goals in Sunday's victory over Union, led the Flames with four shots.

The loss drops coach Potteiger's club to 8-4-3 overall and 6-2-2 in the GSC while the win moves the Chargers to 7-6-1 and 5-3-1. The Flames remain in the third place in the league standings with one more match remaining.

Lee will play its final GSC regular season match on Sunday as it travels to West Alabama for a 4:30 kickoff.

The Lee women's soccer team picked up an important GSC victory on Friday evening when they defeated home-standing University of Alabama Huntsville, 3-0. The win improves the Lady Flames record to 6-4-0 in conference play, 9-5-1 overall. UAH drops to 2-8-1, 11-2.

Lee opened the scoring in the 14th minute on the third goal of the year by senior Kate Carney. Junior Devin Healy delivered her first assist of the season. The margin grew to 2-0 in the 32nd minute as sophomore Kelsey Yoder recorded an unassisted goal. It was her seventh score of the year. The Lady Flames put a little icing on the cake in the 89th minute as freshman Julia Kaset registered an unassisted score. It was her second of the season.

"I thought we played a good game for the entire 90 minutes," commented Lee head coach Chris Hennessey after his club posted the road victory. "Every game at this stage of the season is always a battle but I thought we played a mature second half to finish the game off."

Lee took 27 shots and placed 11 on frame. UAH keeper Megan Buford came up with eight saves. The Chargers were only allowed three shots by the ball-hawking Lady Flame defenders. Taylor Green registered a clean sheet and had one save.

Lee moves on to Livingston, Alabama and a much tougher challenge against the 8-3, 10-4-1 Tigers on Sunday afternoon. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. first kick. "Now we know we have a huge 90 minutes in front of us on Sunday," said Coach Hennessey in closing.
