Covenant women's basketball senior Joanna Smith (Chattanooga, Tn./Chattanooga Christian) has been named the USA South Player of the Week, for the period ending Dec. 9, announced the conference on Monday.

Smith becomes the first player to earn the Player of the Week honor from the USA South in program history. It is the first weekly award for Smith since she was a six-time Rookie of the Week honoree back in the 2015-16 season.

A senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., Smith had an impressive week to help the Scots to a 1-1 record.
Smith averaged 19.5 points, while shooting over 68 percent (13-of-19) from the field, with 15.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. She had consecutive double-doubles starting with a 23-point, 15-rebound effort in a 69-63 loss to Sewanee last Thursday. In an 83-74 win over Webster on Saturday, Smith totaled 16 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, and two steals to lead Covenant to the win.

In Saturday's win over Webster, the senior eclipsed the 1,000-point mark as her driving layup in the second quarter made her the 22nd player in program history to achieve the milestone. Smith is currently just one of seven players in program history to record at least 1,000 career points and 700 career rebounds.

For the season, Smith leads Covenant in scoring (13.0 points per game), rebounding (7.5 per game), and shooting percentage (51.9). Her shooting percentage ranks sixth in the USA South.

Covenant (2-6, 0-2 USA South) will be back in action on Saturday at USA South foe Berea. Tip-off at the Seabury Center in Berea, Ky., is set for 4 p.m.
