Family Of 7 Found After Search At Jacks River Falls

  • Monday, April 30, 2018

A "massive search" was underway on Monday for seven hikers missing at Jacks River Falls in the Cohutta Wilderness. The family was spotted by helicopter late Monday morning and rescued.

The West Polk County Volunteer Fire and Rescue said those missing included three adults and four children.

Zach Harry said he split off from the family when his two boys, ages 9 and 11, began to tire. He said he went to get this truck to meet them at a trailhead. But they still had not arrived when it turned dark. He then called authorities.

The location is in Fannin County, Ga., just south of the Tennessee line.

Also taking part in the search were teams from Murray County, Polk County and Bradley County as well as Georgia DNR.

West Polk had drones ready to deploy, it was stated.

Tri State Mutual Aid had people standing by for a ground search if needed, Eddie Phillips said.

Jacks River Falls is described as "the most visited site in the Cohutta that is reached by a 4.5 mile trail through rugged wilderness."

A command post was set up at the steel bridge on the Jacks River.
