Mocs Cross Country Schedule Features Twilight Season Opener

  • Monday, June 25, 2018

The UTC head coach Andy Meyer announced the 2018 men's and women's cross country schedule including a season-opening home meet.

The Mocs will host the UTC Twilight Cross Country Opener on Friday, Sept. 7, at the UTC Golf Player Development Center on Hickory Valley Road. This will be the Mocs' first meet on the course. The women will run a two-mile course while the men will run a 5-kilometer race.

Following a two-week break for training, Chattanooga will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Greater Louisville Classic at the Tom Sawyer Park on Sept. 29. The men will run an 8K and the women will compete in the 5K.

"This is a huge college race with many of the top teams in the country competing," Meyer said. "It will be a great measure of our fitness."

On Oct. 13, the Mocs will head to Rome, Ga., for the Berry Invitational. The women's race will increase to a 6-kilometer distance, mirroring the NCAA region race while the men will run the 8K.

"This is a great course that draws top competition from the region," Meyer said.

October closes out with the Southern Conference Cross Country Championships to be hosted this season by Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. The women will cover the 5K course and the men will compete in the 8-kilometer distance.

"This meet and the South Region are the focal points of our season," Meyer said. "Western Carolina will have a challenging course and a well-run championship ready for our kids."

The Mocs will head to the NCAA South Region Championships in the second week of November. A good showing here gives Chattanooga the chance to compete at the National Championships later in the month. The men will run in their first 10-kilometer distance of the year while the women will run their second 6K.

"The kids love this course as it is very fast and great footing.

"This schedule allows for us to get good blocks of training under our belts and also allows us to compete on some iconic cross country courses against some of the top competition in the country."
