CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Walker Valley opened the home softball season in a big way on a cold, blustery day at Larry Haney Field making quick work of visiting Hixson with a 10-0 run-rule victory.

Junior right-hander Ryann Presswood and sophomore righty Haley Davis did the job out of the circle giving up a single hit apiece. Presswood worked three innings with four strikeouts and one walk. Davis took over to start the fourth and finished with a pair of Ks and one base on balls.

Power came from Alyssa Davenport who lined a two-run blast over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first inning.

The Lady Mustangs took a 5-0 lead on their next at bat as Addyson Trew and Karly Blackwell ripped a double and triple for two more runs. Blackwell later scored on a Hixson throwing error.

After a scoreless third, the Feisty Fillies tacked on five more in the lower half of the fourth. Autumn Lanclos and Blackwell picked up singles around Trew's double to center field. Alyssa Davenport, Addison Woodall and Morgan Rice all reached after being hit by pitches. Blackwell, Woodall, Rice and Madison Thomas all notched RBIs as 11 Lady Mustangs stepped to the plate.

Davis got a fly ball and a pair of ground outs to put a cap on the win.

“I'm really proud of our girls. They came out with great energy. They were excited to play at home today,” said Lady Mustangs head wrangler Lauren Limburg. “We had a great week at Gulf Shores (Ala.) and I think we just continued to work. We hit the ball really well, played great defense and had great pitching and played together. I'm really proud of their effort today.

Walker Valley opens district play at home Tuesday against Rhea County at 5 p.m., in the second of a three game run. The Lady Mustangs take to the road Thursday to take on East Hamilton also at 5.

“I'm excited to see what they do tomorrow. It's our first district game, we have Rhea County here tomorrow. We're looking forward to starting district and getting that ball rolling,” Limburg said.
