Chattanooga State Introduces The "College Within A College" Program

  • Friday, April 26, 2013

In the fall term of 2013, Chattanooga State Community College plans to introduce the College Within a College. This new program will provide a high-intensity curriculum for the area’s high-achieving students who want to prepare themselves for transfer to the region’s most competitive four-year institutions after graduation.

Courses to be offered in the fall include an introduction to statistics entitled, How Data Drives Decision Making from Pubic Policy to Facebook; an introduction to chemistry called, Understanding Our World – A Chemical Perspective; a physical education course with an activity component entitled, The Science of Fitness and Wellness; A music appreciation course called, Gregorian Chant to Rock ’n’ Roll; and an English composition course entitled, Composition for Publication. Each of the faculty members teaching these courses has a doctorate degree.

Based on pedagogical research confirming the efficacy of learning communities, the goal of the program is to establish a cohort group of students who will take all of their courses together throughout their two years of study at Chattanooga State. This allows students to learn from and with each other while comparing themselves to other high achievers. In addition, College Within a College students will be supported in adjusting to the high-intensity colleges courses by having a librarian, a writing mentor, and an academic advisor/life coach assigned to each of them.

Sufficient funds have been raised to provide full scholarships for 12 students. Students wishing to be considered for the opportunity to participate in the College Within a College should follow the link to the newsletter where the program’s application can be found on the last page.
