New York Times bestselling author Capt. Luis Carlos Montalván and his golden retriever service dog Tuesday will visit Baylor School on Monday. Capt. Montalván will speak to Upper School students from 9:45-10:30 a.m. and will address Middle School students from 11:50 a.m.-12:20 p.m. Both presentations are in the Alumni Chapel.
Capt. Montalván is a 17-year U.S. Army veteran whose awards include two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal for Valor and the Combat Action Badge. Suffering physical wounds and psychological trauma from his service in the Middle East, Capt. Montalván’s book tells the story of how he found it difficult to cope until he was partnered with Tuesday.
"Until Tuesday: A Wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever Who Saved Him," won the 2012 USA Best Book Award in the Autobiography/Memoir and Audiobook non-fiction categories. Capt. Montalván was a finalist for a 2012 APA Audie Award beside four other nominees, including Tina Fey and Michael Moore. "Until Tuesday" was also a 2012 International Latino Book Awards finalist.
In 2014, Macmillan Publishers released Capt. Montalván's first children's book, "Tuesday Tucks Me In: The Loyal Bond between a Soldier and his Service Dog." Amazon.com named the picture book "The Best Nonfiction Children's Book of 2014." The book educates children about the work of service dogs and teaches awareness and empathy for all with disabilities.
