Covenant Men Upend Tennessee Wesleyan 7-0

  • Saturday, September 1, 2018
Two Josh Brower scores and five second half goals were more than enough for the Covenant men's soccer team to defeat Tennessee Wesleyan, 7-0, on Friday evening in the David Taaffe Invitational at Scotland Yard.

Six different Covenant (1-0) players scored in the rout as the Scots outshot the visiting Bulldogs 22-3 on the night.

Brower scored twice, including the match's eventual game-winner early in the first half.
Brower put away his opportunity from short range after being setup by Griffin Felton to put Covenant ahead 1-0 in the sixth minute. Felton notched his first assist of the year in the process.

Covenant added to its lead in the 40th minute when Connor McGimsey found the back of the net from the left side of the box. Keegan Weekley's through ball made it to the feet of McGimsey, who slotted the ball past Tennessee Wesleyan keeper Max Rose for his first career goal.

Holding a 2-0 lead at the break, Covenant didn't settle. The Scots would score five times in the second half to run away with the win.

Brower scored again in the 51st minute as the junior scored from long distance above the box to put Covenant ahead 3-0. Ethan Pettit was credited with the assist.

In the 52nd minute, Jesse Riggs converted a penalty kick to make it 4-0. In the 80th minute, Jake Major tallied a score, assisted by Weekley, to up the margin to 5-0. Parker Owen added a goal off a free kick from just beyond the box in the 86th minute to make it 6-0. Finally, freshman Beni Kiss got in on the fun as he received a long ball from Colby Pepper and beat the Bulldog defense before scoring past Rose.

Paul Lemay made two saves in his 45 minutes of action at keeper for Covenant. Lemay and Henry Hooks combined for the shutout.

Rose made four saves for the Bulldogs.
