Porfiri Is GPS Geo Bee Winner

  • Tuesday, January 31, 2017

GSP sixth grader Harlan Porfiri bested 75 other middle school students to win the Geo Bee title.
In the Championship round, she bested sixth grader Alden Mazo by answering two of the three final round questions correctly. The final round was held in front of the entire Middle School during assembly.

These were the three final round questions (answers below):

Colombia, with low coastal plains along both the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, borders which Central American country?

The Donets Basin is an industrial area shared by Russia and which neighboring country to the west?

The endangered snow leopard is being protected in the Annapurna Conservation Area, which includes the Annapurna Massif in which Asian country?

The Geography Bee is sponsored each year by the National Geographic Society to increase geographic awareness in the United States. It is open to all 4th-8th graders, so Harlan will have the opportunity to repeat as the GPS champion for the next two years.

Harlan will now take a written geography test to see if she can qualify for the State Bee in Nashville on March 31. Only the 100 highest-scoring participants qualify at the state level. The winner of the Tennessee State Bee goes to the National Bee in May, where the winner receives over $50,000 in prizes and scholarships.

Answers: Panama, Ukraine, and Nepal
