John Floyd Johnson, 74, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2019, in Freeport, New York.

He was born to John Earl and Juanita J. Johnson in Alabama, and raised in Chattanooga. He moved north where his love for working on the railroad began with the Pennsylvania Railroad.  He transferred and relocated to New York in the mid-’60s and continued his career of Riding the Rails until his retirement from the Long Island Railroad in 1998. His love of the outdoors could be seen in his competitive nature in his participation in tennis tournaments and swimming, but his true love was running. He participated continually in many local and out of state marathons including the New York Marathon, Long Island Marathon, and the Peachtree Road Race for over 20 years. He was a consistent and compassionate friend. If he could help you, he would. He was a master of household repair ranging from electrical work, plumbing, masonry, carpentry, roofing, tile work, as well as general automotive repair. If it was broken, he could not only fix it, but fix it RIGHT!

He leaves to loving memory three sisters, Annie Jean Battles, Rosetta Johnson, Wanda Shamburger, and a brother, Ronald Johnson. He leaves to loving memory a devoted and loving companion, Hyacinth Comrie; two sons, Patrick K. Johnson, U.S.M.C, Ret. (Claudette), GA; Kieran J. Gomez, N.Y.; and daughter, Kimberly S. Coltrain (nee Johnson), Georgia; along with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His presence will never be forgotten.

Rest well, dear one.

Mr. Johnson will lie in repose after noon on Friday, Aug. 23, and from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24.

A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home. Interment will be in Forest Hills Cemetery.

Arrangements by John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 423 622-9995.
