Job Announcement

Are you passionate about giving a voice to people who have been marginalized and feel overlooked and powerless? Are you looking to make a difference in the lives of people? Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise (CNE) is working in Oak Grove, a neighborhood with rapidly escalating housing prices where some of the most vulnerable live. CNE wants to engage and build power amongst Oak Grove residents to influence the conditions and policies that impact where they live.

CNE is seeking a Community Engagement Specialist to organize, educate, and empower marginalized individuals and communities, including our immigrant community by 1) fostering the development of leadership and advocacy skills among residents; 2) support the growth of relationships and community identity among residents; 3). support residents as they identify issues of mutual concern; and 4). support resident advocacy for policy at multiple levels within the community (i.e., landlord, school officials, city council, state legislators) to improve their lives.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

- Must be willing to actively and aggressively physically canvass the Oak Grove neighborhood
- Collaboratively develop and implement time specific plans to resolve identified community safety, housing, and other quality of life issues
- Organize block and stakeholder groups around specific objectives such as safety, beautification, housing and other quality of life standards
- Engage residents through one-on-ones (A one-to-one meeting is a focused 40-minute meeting with a person to begin to build a relationship and to look for leaders for public action), celebrations and events that create and build a network of community members to encourage and support resident’s participation in activities and a sense of community.
- Provide training and information on key community issues, advocacy skills, facilitation and group leadership skills
- With resident leaders, design and support campaigns to change policy and conditions that improve their lives
- Refer individuals who require support in accessing resources and/or building self-reliance through coaching, case management and programs to the appropriate service provider
- Create communication and promotional literature for distribution, such as newsletters, brochures or flyers in Spanish and English.
- Bridge and foster partnerships with the community, relevant organizations and elected officials that support community goals
- Develop and maintain effective communication between CNE and the community
- Provide analysis and reporting of program progress and success
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

- Must be bilingual (written and oral) in Spanish and English.
- Effectively facilitate meetings and community gatherings and teach others how to as well.
- Strong cultural humility with the ability to work effectively in an environment with diverse cultures, multiple perspectives, and competing needs.
- Demonstrate a commitment to recognizing resident’s knowledge and power.
- Work collaboratively with others in a team environment, respecting and valuing the perspectives and contributions of others.
- Develop effective working partnerships with residents, faith-based organizations, educational, nonprofit organizations, and community groups.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Strong passion and ability for advocacy, sustainable community development, and equitable outcomes a must
- Demonstrates a high level of verbal, writing, and listening skills.
- Proficient with MS Office (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook).
- Fluent in the use of various cell phone and social media communication tools and platforms.
- Balance community organizing with our role as developer.
Education/Experience
Minimum of five years of experience working with structurally marginalized populations and familiar with community organizing strategies. Experience in neighborhood organizing focused on community development issues such as housing and economic development is a plus.
Salary: $38,000-$45,000/year DOE, Comprehensive Benefit Package
