Sandra Evans Terry

Sandra Evans Terry was born on February 23, 1947, to Eugene Evans, Sr, and Virgie Lee Evans. She was the third child born to their union. Her siblings included Eugene Junior, Addie Mae, Ransom, James, Gerald, and Marvin. The family lived in the Alton Park community and attended West Side Missionary Baptist Church. Sandra accepted the Lord Jesus as her Savior at a young age at Westside Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J.C. Bonner, III. Sandra graduated from Howard High School in 1965. She studied Cosmetology and later obtained her license. She also worked for LifeTouch Photography for many years before retiring.

Sandra joined Prospect Baptist Church after marrying the love of her life, Jerry Terry. Sandra was an active choir member and enjoyed visiting the sick with her mother-in-law, Dovie Terry. After Jerry Terry accepted the call to the Ministry, he became the Pastor of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Stevenson, AL. Sandra worked faithfully with her husband at Morning Star and helped build the Children’s Ministry as well as serving in the choir. Later, Rev. Terry was called to St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Chattanooga, TN. Sandra worked with the youth, especially the Sisters in Christ and sang in the choir. Sandra was always quick to check on members and add people to the Prayer list.

Sandra was a prayer warrior and a strong woman of faith. She had a kind spirit and shared God’s love with others. She enjoyed making hats, word search puzzles, and watching Christmas movies on Hallmark. Her favorite color was pink, and she enjoyed anything with butterflies. To the very end, her favorite snack was a popsicle, any flavor.

Sandra Evans Terry died on Sept. 2. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Sr. and Virgie Lee Evans, preceded in death by two brothers: Eugene Evans, Jr. and Gerald Evans (who died at the age of four), her granddaughter, LaKita Hicks, and her beloved husband of 50 years, Rev. Jerry L. Terry.

Surviving relatives include her three sons, Kenneth (Delores) Hicks, Randall (Monikiea) Hicks, and Eric (Deborah) Terry; adopted daughter Nita (James) Starnes; six grandchildren, Nicole Jones, Ed'ion Jones, Chris Jones, Dominic (Nicole) Jones, Alexis Terry, and Eric Terry, Jr.; siblings, Addie Mae Sanders, Ransom Evans, James (Dianne) Evans, and Marvin (Gloria) Evans; special sister, Fontaine Moore; nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends: Sharon McClain, James Mathis, and Gail Mathis.

Public viewing will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the chapel of the funeral home, followed by a 1 p.m. funeral service.
