Two weeks ago I did something monumental. I deleted all of my social media accounts. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok (yes I had TikTok) are all gone. Why? Because today I choose to live my life based on what brings me joy. When I realized that social media invited more dread than joy I knew what I had to do.
Life’s moments really, really matter and looking at a screen no longer added quality or joy to mine. The negative effect of social media outweighed the positive. Truth be told, I was pretty scared of doing it- what if I missed it? Could I live without the funny memes, videos, posts and pictures of friends? Is there life after Facebook?
I threw caution to the wind and went for it-deleted! And what followed? Pure, beautiful silence. The buzzing in my head telling me I need to check my media is gone. I have more time, less stress, less frustration. I have space in my head to breathe and create.
It is the single most powerful act of self-care I have ever taken.
I do still find myself thinking of funny things I could post, but then I remember-and I don’t miss it one little bit.
