I am writing to formally report an urgent and ongoing safety issue at a senior living facility owned and operated by Silver Tree Residential in Chattanooga.
The building is nine stories tall, and the elevators - an essential service for all residents - have been repeatedly malfunctioning on a daily basis. While temporary repairs are attempted, the elevators continue to fail and do not operate reliably or safely. This has created extremely dangerous conditions for residents.
Many tenants rely on walkers or wheelchairs, and the lack of dependable elevator service has already led to falls and near-injuries.
Residents are being forced to remain in their units for extended periods because they cannot safely access other floors. This includes being unable to obtain groceries, attend medical appointments or participate in normal daily activities.
Additionally, there is growing fear among residents that the elevator may fail catastrophically, including concerns about it dropping or malfunctioning while in use. Whether or not these fears are technically founded, the lack of consistent, safe operation has created a climate of anxiety and distress among vulnerable seniors.
Despite repeated complaints, management has responded primarily by asking residents to “be patient,” without providing a clear or adequate long-term solution. Given the severity and frequency of these issues, temporary fixes are not sufficient. The situation strongly indicates the need for a full repair or replacement of the elevator system.
This ongoing failure is not only disruptive - it presents a serious risk to resident safety, mobility and overall well-being. Tenants feel as though they are being neglected and unfairly forced to live under unsafe and restrictive conditions.
We respectfully request the following immediate actions:
- A full inspection of the elevator system by qualified authorities;
- A clear and transparent timeline for permanent repair or replacement;
- Implementation of temporary accommodations to ensure residents can safely access essential services; and
- Prompt communication with residents regarding corrective actions.
This matter requires urgent attention before further harm occurs. We ask that appropriate action be taken immediately to ensure the safety and dignity of all residents.
