Caroline Williams was sworn in to a vacant seat on the Lookout Mountain, Ga., City Council on Thursday night.

Mayor Sandy Gothard swore in Ms. Williams, noting that she brings much experience to the council as a longtime member of the community and also serving in various capacities at Fairyland Elementary School.

The council is reviewing a proposed ordinance that would allow beer and wine sales at special events in the tourist and commercial zones.  The potential ordinance would allow someone with a current license and insurance to sell beer and wine on a temporary basis for a small period of time such as one to three days without having to go through the process of getting a long-term permit.

The council also amended and adopted several new ordinances.  Ordinance 282 replaces 107 requiring utility companies digging up city streets to use flowable fill beneath the street surface.
By doing this it would eliminate the potholes and culverts that develop over time after the streets have been repaired.  It also requires utility companies that fail to make the proper repairs responsible for subsequent repairs due to inferior materials.  The council approved the ordinance.

The second ordinance approved was 283 replacing 254 and will regulate soil erosion and sedimentation control. City Manager Brad Haven said this is a requirement of the state of Georgia.

Also, the council approved amendments to fee schedules for building permits, development, zoning, and rezoning.

Mr. Haven reported that the city’s new leaf machine is due to be delivered next week.  He also said that he is waiting on final approval from GDOT for the street signs along state routes.  Installation will begin soon.

Caroline Williams said there are several upcoming events at Fairyland School.  March 3rd Fairyland Elementary will host a community art show, March 13 and 14 the school will have a performance of Aladdin, March 16-19 the school will have a scholastic book fair, and April 30 is the date of the Fairyland Festival.

Mayor Gothard announced that in August an election will be held for two seats on the council.  Currently council members Taylor Watson and Jim Sabourin’s seats will be available.  At this time if any qualified candidates want to run they can pick up a form at city hall.  Ms. Watson and Mr. Sabourin intend to serve the city council unless opposed.

Mayor Gothard also encouraged the council to begin working on a new ordinance addressing the uses of POD-type storage units on people’s property.  He and other members of the council have received complaints about various POD units in the city limits.  He would like to see an ordinance that limits the amount of time that they can be used within city limits.
