The Cleveland State Community College Health and Science Center construction project began in August 2019 with the groundbreaking at the corner of Adkisson Drive and Norman Chapel Road
Just a year and a half after a ceremonial groundbreaking at the corner of Adkisson Drive and Norman Chapel Road on the campus of Cleveland State Community College, the new Health and Science Center is just weeks away from opening its doors.
The first courses will be taught in the college’s first new academic facility in more than 40 years beginning March 15. Nursing, EMS/Paramedic, Medical Assisting, and Microbiology students will be the first to use the brand new space. The 53,000-square foot, two-story structure was constructed by BarberMcMurry Architects.
“We are thrilled with the experiential teaching opportunities we'll have in the new building,” said Dr. Barsha Pickell, Cleveland State Community College vice president for Academic Affairs. “We will have a state-of-the-art simulation lab and simulated hospital unit for our nursing students; a simulated physician’s office suite with reception area, exam rooms, laboratory, and records area for our medical assisting students; ambulance simulators for our EMS students; and spacious new biology labs, classrooms, and computer labs. Students and faculty alike are excited about the real hands-on learning experiences they'll have and are eager to move in.”
These classes are currently underway in other buildings on campus. However, the college will officially move the classes into the Health and Science Center mid-term, during Spring Break 2021. It will officially open for classes, and to the public, on March 15.
Also set to open later this year is Cleveland State’s brand new Athens Center. It will be based in the new McMinn Higher Education Center currently under construction in McMinn County. The 52,000-square foot facility is located at the corner of George R. Price Boulevard and Denso Drive in Athens, Tennessee. The Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT-Athens) and the University of Tennessee Extension Offices will also be housed at the new location. The building is being constructed by Rouse Construction Company.
