Urban League To Help Eligible Families File Tax Returns And Receive Advance Child Tax Credit Payments

  • Tuesday, June 22, 2021
This weekend, the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga will host informational sessions regarding the Advance Child Tax Credit. In these sessions, Urban League personnel will help families file their 2020 tax returns and quickly receive monthly payments from the Child Tax Credit, which is awarded to taxpaying parents with at least one dependent who is 17 years old or younger. Payments start on July 15 and are distributed monthly until Dec. 15.

“2020 saw a wide variety of economic challenges and many families are still suffering from the impact of the pandemic,” said Candy Johnson, president and CEO of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga.
“Now, we are helping people take advantage of national relief programs and other opportunities as our community continually recovers. The Advance Child Tax Credit will increase many family’s tax refunds and help them get that money sooner.”

Those with primary legal responsibility for children up to 17 years old likely qualify for increased payments related to this tax credit. In 2020, the Child Tax Credit offered $2,000 per child up to the age of 16. This year, however, the credit offers $3,600 for each child under the age of six and $3,000 for children who are six to 17 years old. Starting in July, this money will be broken into monthly payments for those who qualify.

Those who have yet to file their 2020 taxes can receive assistance and more information from the Urban League. On Friday, June 25, filing aid will take place at the Urban League’s Kingdom Center, at 730 E. MLK Jr. Blvd., from 2-6 p.m. On Saturday, June 26, Urban League personnel will be at Second Missionary Baptist Church, at 2305 E. 3rd St., from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Appointments are on a walk-in basis.

Participants must bring a current government-issued photo identification card like a driver’s license, personal social security card and social security cards for all dependents and other supporting documents such as W-2 forms that are needed to complete tax returns.
