When Brigham Young University played at Oregon last Saturday, the Ducks student section more than deserved an unsportsmanlike penalty. During the game, on four different occasions, the students chanted “F*** The Mormons! … F*** The Mormons! …” and, as we will all agree, there is no place in sports or anywhere else for such filth. Utah Governor Spencer Cox quickly tweeted “Religious Bigotry alive and embraced in Oregon” and, of course, there was a rash of official apologies that began almost immediately.
Brigham Young is a private university that is owned and operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where its followers are colloquially known as Mormons.
So, I believe the next time the college football rules committee meets, somebody should propose that the head referee who hears such slurs or profanity at any school should penalize the students with a flag that will cost their team 15 yards.
Say it on four different occasions and any coach will snap at the punks who just cost his team 60 yards to play. (Oregon beat BYU 41-20)
In Chattanooga last week a City Council candidate who is known to be a radical hothead used the F-word several times on a police cam while officers were questioning her on a headlight issue. She should have been taken to jail and should have to explain her abhorrent behavior to a judge. It is clearly unacceptable. I don’t know the penalty for public profanity but the female police officer certainly deserves an apology.

In Salem, Oregon, there is a hotshot high school quarterback named TC Manumaleuna II – a Polynesian -- who is being actively recruited by both Oregon and BYU. He was at Saturday’s game and happens to be a Mormon. He and his parents left at halftime because of the chants. He told a news reporter he wouldn’t necessarily cross the Ducks off his list, but added that he would be "lying if I said it didn't have some kind of impact on me." He said that coaches from Oregon reached out to him after the game to check on him. He's also considering BYU, Florida State, Miami, Washington State and Cal, among others.
