Covenant Baseball Loses Two On Senior Day

On its Senior Day, the Covenant baseball team took on league-leader's Maryville for a doubleheader. The Scots were over-matched in game one before dropping a heartbreaker in the series finale. 

Game 1 Final: Covenant 5, Maryville 17 (7 innings) Four consecutive RBI base hits for Maryville with two outs in the first inning put it in front 5-0. 
A leadoff home run by Zach Devries in the second inning made it 6-0, Maryville. 
Chase McBryar put Covenant on the board in the bottom of the frame with a 2-RBI double to left field.  A six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run from Zac Graham for Maryville put the score at 12-2.

Maryville kept its foot on the gas as four hits, three walks, and one error led to five more runs to make it 17-2. Zeke Gilbert blasted his team-high sixth home run of the year in the fifth inning scored Covenant's third run.  Later in the frame, a RBI single by Cody Gibson and a bases-loaded walk from Jackson Smith made it 17-5. 

Maryville outhit Covenant 12-7. Covenant committed three errors while Maryville had none. 
McBryar led the Scots with 2 RBIs. Zach Barrett (3 IP, 6 H, 10 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K), Ethan Goebert (1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 K), Jake Schock (0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB), and Judah O'Neal (2.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K) all pitched for Covenant. 

Game 2 Final: Covenant 5, Maryville 6 Chris Savage delivered a RBI double to left field in the first inning to put Covenant ahead 1-0. Back-to-back RBI groundouts from Cody Gibson and McBryar made it 3-0. It took until the fifth inning, but Maryville got on the board with a 2-RBI single to right field. 

In the bottom of the frame, Covenant made it 5-2 thanks to a RBI single from Kenny Mills, and a RBI double from Gilbert. Covenant tried to extend its lead in the seventh inning, but Daniel Bell was thrown out at home plate trying to score from third base on a potential sacrifice fly. 
A pair of RBI singles mixed with a balk in between for Maryville, tied the game up in the eighth inning. A RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning by Daniel Montana of Maryville turned out to be the winning hit. The Scots loaded the bases with one out in their final at-bats, but a pop out and a fly out ended the game. 

Covenant moves to 15-27 all-time against Maryville.  Each team had four hits.
Covenant committed four errors while Maryville had just one.  Gilbert led the Scots with two hits.
Scotty Smith (7.2 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HBP) had another solid outing for Covenant.  Jonathan Glover (1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER) pitched in relief for the Scots.

Covenant has this next week off for exams before returning to the diamond at Berea on May 2nd to begin its final CCS series.
