UTC Women's Tennis Loses 4-3 To Western Carolina; Men Lose 5-2 At Mercer

The Chattanooga Mocs women’s tennis team suffered a tough 4-3 defeat to Western Carolina on Alumni Day in Southern Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Center on campus.

Following the defeat, Chattanooga falls to 8-12 overall and 1-5 inside SoCon play with one match remaining next weekend. Western Carolina rounds out the regular season 9-13 overall and 1-6 inside league action.

In doubles, Chattanooga claimed a 1-0 lead in the match following victories at No.

1 and No. 2. Rozalie Dohnalova and Alice Hall earned a 6-1 victory at the top spot before Caroline Gibbens and Emma Peeler notched a 7-5 decision in the two spot to clinch the team point.

Dohnalova gave UTC a 2-1 lead in the early part of singles play with a clean 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position after WCU tied the match following a winner at No. 2 singles. Emma Pedretti upped the hosts lead to 3-1 with a hard-earned 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaking win in the No. 6 battle.

The Catamounts continued to fight and posted winners at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively, to tie the match at 3-3 with one match remaining on court No. 3 with Gibbens playing as UTC’s representative. WCU’s Angela Perez escaped with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in the deciding third set to give the guests the 4-3 team victory.

Chattanooga closes out regular season play with its season finale on Saturday, March 13, with a 3:30 p.m. ET matchup against Mercer at home at the UTC Tennis Center. Match coverage links will be available on the schedule page at GoMocs.com leading up to the match.

 The Chattanooga Mocs men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat in Southern Conference action at Mercer in Macon, Ga., at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
 
Following the defeat, Chattanooga drops to 8-14 overall and 2-4 inside SoCon play. Mercer improves to 7-10 on the season and sits at 4-1 in league matches.
 
In doubles play, Mercer took a 1-0 lead after capturing victories in the bottom two positions in the battles at No. 2 and No. 3. The No. 1 tandem of Peyton Gatti and Jakub Jupa earned a comfortable 6-2 win to aid the Mocs efforts.
 
In singles, Mercer posted wins at the No. 3-No.6 slots after Chattanooga claimed wins in the top two pairings. Jupa posted a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 comeback win in the first pairing while Gabriel Castillo cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2 to amass the team's two points on the day.
