It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our elegant mother, grandmother, aunt and sister, Barbara J. Throssell Stewart who left us Monday, September 9, 2024, at the age of 93.

She was a long-term resident of Alexian Village on Signal Mountain and her daughter, Karen, was at her side as she slipped away accompanied by some of the best Glenn Miller big band favorites and the promise of dancing with abandon and pain free very soon.

Her last weekend was spent surrounded by family who were here to celebrate the impending arrival of her first great-grandchild. She had the good fortune to be able to say goodbye to so many that she loved in person.

Barbara lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, travel, laughter, and love. Memories of her always include stories of her impeccable appearance, the detail and care she put into hosting parties and events and her love of birds and nature. She always kept bird feeders wherever the family lived and was especially fond of hummingbirds. She was a world traveler who lived in Canada, Japan and Egypt as well as the USA and UK. Her smile lit up the room and drew people to her to chat about her travels, even meeting the Queen of England while living in Japan.

Her children and grandchildren will always be shaped by the great influence that she had on their lives through special traditions, unrelenting determination, a love for birds both pets and wildlife, her willingness to embrace and support those around her, and of course, her captivating smile.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, John Hay Stewart; and her parents, Ernest John and Grace Throssell; and her sister, Valerie Bishop (Brian).

Survivors include her daughters, Denise Lee and Karen Walsh (Thomas); grandchildren: Lauren Ryan (Stephen), Patrick Stewart Walsh, Aidan Walsh, Anastassiya Lay (Michael) and sisters: Daphne Pugh (Nick) and Wendy Thompson (Mick).

She will be laid to rest on a beautiful hillside cemetery in Largs, Scotland at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ChattaNeuter (ChattaNeuter.org) or the Alzheimer’s Association (act.alz.org)

Arrangements are entrusted to Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415, 423 877-3524, lanefh.com.
