Junior linebacker Alex Mitchell led a strong defensive effort last weekend in the 23rd-ranked Chattanooga Mocs matchup with No. 14 Mercer. The Mocs held the Bears to 37 points below their scoring average in a 10-3 loss in Finley Stadium.
Mitchell, a native of Murfreesboro, Tenn., had a career night tying his high in tackles with 11 while setting a new career best with nine solo stops. Those nine were more than any other tackler had total for the game except teammate Reuben Lowery III who had nine (4 solo-5 assists).
The junior also set a career high with two tackles for loss that also included his second career sack.
“Alex is an important part of our defense,” Coach Rusty Wright said.
“He makes the calls and helps get everyone in the right positions. He continues to get better and has the opportunity every week to make a huge impact on this team.”
Mitchell leads the defense with 28 tackles. Fifteen of those are solos which is more than all but three teammates – Jordan Walker (21), Lowery (20) & Josh Battle (18) – have total.
He and his Mocs are off this weekend. They return to action on Sept. 28 in Finley Stadium welcoming the Portland State Vikings. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
