Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides problem solving opportunities for students of all ages. By solving open-ended problems on their own, students develop creative thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations. The USA and 20 other countries participate in this program. Teams of seven students each choose one of five competitive problems to solve, problems that cover a wide-range of interests. Teams work on their solutions throughout the year, on a limited budget and only with adult oversight, and then compete at the state level. Scoring is based on the long-term solution to the problem, how well they solve on-the-spot spontaneous problems, and the style or elaboration of their solution.
