Jack Benson - The Epitome Of Outstanding Public Service

  • Friday, January 16, 2015

Yesterday, Chattanooga lost one of its most devoted public servants. Jack Benson was the epitome of integrity and commitment. He exhibited a passion for the job and was rare in that he held office for the right reasons--he viewed his role as an opportunity to serve his community. Because of that focus, Jack was an unselfish leader.

Jack was chosen by his fellow Council members to serve as chair numerous times. My office was next to his and I heard him on the phone for hours each day, returning calls to constituents, listening, and explaining his position on issues.  Jack came to the office every day and stayed for hours. Even though the Council salary reflected part-time compensation, Jack worked the job as though it were full-time. I can't recall him missing any Council meetings, even on days when he underwent treatment for skin cancer. He balked at unnecessary time off from the Council during holidays. He refused to accept a meal offered on Tuesday nights because he did not think taxpayers should buy his dinner.

As a new Council member, I frequently sought Jack’s advice. He always made time for me and I left his office with a better direction. I had the utmost respect for Jack. He was unmoving on a lot of issues. However, there were times when he would say publicly that he had been wrong and apologize. He was tough-minded, but would listen to an opposing viewpoint.

I doubt that most residents of Chattanooga and Hamilton County will ever realize the impact and positive accomplishments that came about because of Jack Benson. I was blessed to be able to know him and learn from him. He was my mentor and friend and I will miss him greatly. My thoughts go out  to the Benson family.
