Hucks For Heroes Continues To Gear Up For Fundraiser

  • Wednesday, October 7, 2015

More than 20 Lee University students continue to raise funds for the families of those whose lives were taken in the Chattanooga shooting this July. The students are hosting Hucks for Heroes, a 90-hour ultimate Frisbee game in attempt to break the Guinness World Record, while raising support for those affected.

“Even months after tragedy has struck the lives of five families in Chattanooga, our hearts break for those who lost loved ones,” said Derek Murray, Lee student and event coordinator. "This game is the best way we know how to show support, both emotionally and financially. We see this as an opportunity to take care of them as a small return for what they have done for us."

The students involved in the fundraiser are gathering sponsorships from local businesses to help them reach their goal. All proceeds raised from Hucks for Heroes will be donated to the 7-16 Freedom Fund of Chattanooga, who will then distribute the funds among the five families, as well as to the family of Chattanooga Police Officer Pedigo.

The Hucks for Heroes ultimate Frisbee game will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at the recreational field on Lee’s campus and end at the AT&T field in downtown Chattanooga on Sunday, Oct. 25. The event will feature a performance by American Idol runner up and recent Lee grad Clark Beckham, along with local country artist Smith and Wesley at AT&T field in celebration of the completion of the event.

The students participating in the game are involved in all different areas on Lee University’s campus and include a number of Chattanooga-area natives. A member of the United States Army will also play in the game. In attendance will be Officer Pedigo who is on the long road to recovery after the shootings.

“I’m excited because I get to stretch myself physically and mentally to help the families affected,” said Ben Calhoun, one of the team members. “I am so honored to be able to participate in this fundraiser on their behalf.”

There will be a $5 fee at the gate of AT&T field for those wishing to come and show support, which will go directly to the Freedom Fund. Individuals or businesses interested in being an event sponsor or making a donation, contact Murray at derek@remedyflies.com.
