Agency To Protect The Boils Wildlife Management Area And Visitors

  • Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency invites support to protect The Boils Wildlife Management Area in Jackson County. Littering and increased use of ATVs along with other four-wheel drive vehicles has caused extensive damage and created unsafe conditions for visitors. TWRA is stepping up patrols of the area and will strictly enforce laws governing use of the wildlife management area.

Four-wheel use has occurred not only in the creek bed, but also in the surrounding area causing erosion and environmental damage. Driving through water and across gravel bars affects habitat for spawning fish and other unique creatures such as juvenile Hellbenders, Tennessee’s largest salamander. Despite environmental damage, TWRA is more concerned with visitor safety, said officials.

Other recreational activities, including fishing, swimming and boating have also increased in this area. Jackson County Wildlife Officer, Tom Gothard stated, “Off-road vehicles have a serious environmental impact and we (TWRA) care about this. However, safety is our biggest concern.” Gothard continued, “We want this area to continue being a family friendly location where visitors can enjoy our natural resources.” TWRA encourages visitors to call the Region Three office should they witness any illegal activities.
