Point Park To Host Western Federal Infantry Event Aug. 6-7

  • Tuesday, July 26, 2016

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park invites the public to attend a special living history weekend at Point Park, located atop historic Lookout Mountain on Saturday, Aug. 6 and Sunday, Aug. 7.

Throughout the weekend, visitors can visit a Civil War encampment and talk to living historians about the daily lives of soldiers. The camp will be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Soldiers will also conduct rifle firing demonstrations at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 on Saturday and at 10:30, 11:30, 1:30 and 2:30 on Sunday.

On Nov.

24, 1863, Union infantry advanced up the west side of Lookout Mountain and swept around the mountain’s point.  Known as the “Battle Above the Clouds,” the Battle of Lookout Mountain forced outnumbered and outflanked Confederate defenders to withdraw to Missionary Ridge late that afternoon and evening.  On the morning of Nov. 25, 1863, members of the 8th Kentucky Infantry (US) climbed to summit of the mountain and planted their flag on the point, giving renewed hope to Union troops in Chattanooga.

Admission to Point Park is $5 per adult, ages 16 and older (15 and younger are free). For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, please contact the Lookout Mountain Visitor Center at 423-821-7786, the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706-866-9241.
