A free class on straw bale gardening will be offered Saturday
The Master Gardeners of Hamilton County, in association with the University of Tennessee Extension, add to their outreach programs with free monthly gardening classes open to the public. The topic on Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon will be “Straw Bale Gardening” presented by Robbie Summerour, a certified straw bale instructor.
MGHC classes take place at the UT Extension, Agricultural Service Center, 6183 Adamson Cir., off Bonny Oaks Drive. For additional information, visit www.mghc.org.
For those not familiar with Straw Bale Gardening, Ms. Summerour explains, “This new concept in natural container gardening is gaining popularity for its versatility, practicality and economic impact. With very little investment, even those with poor soil or limited space can grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers in the equivalent of a raised bed. The result is a garden that is both productive and requires much less work with weeding, watering, and pest control. In addition, straw bales act as a natural insulator, extending the growing season with cold weather vegetables. No special tools are needed, and no special knowledge of gardening is really required to be successful. Novice and experienced gardeners will enjoy learning about this economical new way to garden.”
Master Gardeners of Hamilton County is a non-profit, educational, volunteer organization that plays an important role in the civic life of Chattanooga and the surrounding area. The many on-going landscape partnerships undertaken by MGHC include: Bonny Oaks Arboretum, Reflection Riding Arboretum and Nature Center, Chattanooga Area Food Bank, Chattanooga Aquarium Butterfly & Hummingbird Garden, Chattanooga Library, Chattanooga Zoo, and Siskin Children’s Garden.
Admission is free. for more information visit http://mghc.org/ and https://www.facebook.com/mghctn/?fref=ts.
