“The Shadow Of Nat Turner” Presentation To Be Offered On July 1 At Chickamauga Battlefield

  • Tuesday, June 20, 2017

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will host a special 45-minute program at Chickamauga Battlefield, on Saturday, July 1, at 2 p.m.

This program, beginning at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center, will explore the impact the 1831 slave insurrection, led by Nat Turner, had on the South and how the echoes of that event were still being felt on the battlefield of Chickamauga, over three decades later. Attendees should dress appropriately for conditions and bring along a bottle of water and a folding chair, if they like.

Organizers said, "Nat Turner’s Revolt was the stuff of nightmares for slaveholders across the South.

The thoughts of enslaved men breaking the chains of bondage and fighting for their freedom created a culture of fear that finally boiled over into the events leading to the outbreak of the Civil War.  To hear some of the stories of how the revolt affected a number of men who fought in the Battle of Chickamauga, join a park ranger for a short drive onto the battlefield."

For more information about upcoming programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, contact the Lookout Mountain Visitor Center at 423 821-7786, the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center at 706 866-9241, or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/chch
