Paul Leander Gass, 79, of Dayton, Tennessee, formerly of Ooltewah, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, August 7, 2017 peacefully at his home.

Paul was born on July 23, 1938, to the late James Lea and Helen Louise (Campbell) Gass. He graduated from Tyner High School and attended Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. He graduated from the IBEW 175 Electrical Apprenticeship program.

He retired from IBEW 175 in 2007 after 52 years. During the last 30 plus years of his career he was elected president, then business manager/financial secretary, and with this position there were several men on his staff. Altogether, there were approximately 3,000 union electricians under his supervision. He traveled extensively across the US with his job. In November he always met with the senators and congressmen, he met several of the presidents personally while in Washington D.C.

He was active with Chattanooga United Way and was a member of Alhambra Shrines and Scottish Rite. He served in the Tennessee National Guard from 1956 to 1964. He was a member of Tyner Church of Christ in Chattanooga. Since moving to Dayton he attended First United Methodist Church until he became too sick to attend.

In his younger days he enjoyed coaching his boys in baseball, hunting, fishing, and was also an Eagle Scout. He continued to show his John Deere Antique Tractors.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Orville Gass.

He is survived by his loving wife, Sandra (Voigt) Gass of Dayton, son, Michael (Ailene) Gass of Athens, Tn., Steve and Jeff Gass of Ooltewah, daughter, Paula (Charles) Crowe of Dayton, three grandchildren, Stevie Johnson of Ocoee, Charlotte and Ember Crowe of Dayton, sister, Nancy (Rick) Gehrke of Ooltewah, and brother, J.D. Gass of Ooltewah.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, in the funeral home chapel with Gary Watkins officiating.
