Three local artists will reveal on Friday a series of mobile murals depicting Latin American culture. The murals portray scenes from Mexico, Guatemala and Peru. The works show displays of the countries’ folklore and culture, intensified by the artists’ use of colors and interpretation.
The artists— Jacinta Oviedo, Martha Ordoñez, and Juana Gamez— created the murals through the ArtsBuild Equity in the Arts program. The program was created to support projects led by local Black and Latino artists.
Oviedo, Ordoñez and Gamez also participate in and help lead La Paz's art program which was created in 2014 as a way to engage Latinx women in the arts.
Information about each mural will be available in English and Spanish. The artists will also be present to discuss the artworks.
The event will take place from 5-6 p.m. at Chattanooga’s City Hall and is free and open to the public. Traditional “botanas” (snacks) and beverages will be served. Mayor Andy Berke will deliver remarks.
