  • Wednesday, August 29, 2018

The Lee University School of Music will host Dr. Youngmi Kim for a recital and a masterclass on Monday in Squires Recital Hall. The recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. and the masterclass at 3 that afternoon.

Dr. Kim will perform with Dr. ChoEun Lee, an assistant professor of collaborative piano/vocal coaching in the School of Music. The pair’s recital will be a diverse program from Baroque to Romantic repertoires on both piano and harpsichord.

A soprano born in South Korea, Dr. Kim is an assistant professor of music and vocal department coordinator at Georgia College. She studied at the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati, where she earned her doctorate and master’s.

Dr. Kim is the recipient of numerous awards, including first prize at the William C. Byrd Young Artist Competition and third prize at the Louisville Bach Society Gerhard Herz Young Artist Competition. While studying at CCM, she won the Emilie Dieterle Award.

Her voice has been hailed by San Francisco Classical Voice as “one of those silvery, strand-of-pearls-type voices.” Dr. Kim has performed in multiple ensembles and festivals, such as the Catacoustic Consort, La Donna Musicale, and Vancouver Early Music Festival.

As a soloist, Dr. Kim has performed with the Honolulu Symphony, the Korean Broadcasting Symphony, and Richmond Symphony, among others.

Dr. ChoEun Lee joined the School of Music faculty in 2016. She has given numerous performances in major venues, including Carnegie Hall and Ozawa Hall, and participated in American Institute of Music Studies (AIMS), Aspen Music Festival, and Tanglewood Music Festival. This season, her concerts include a premier of a co-commissioned work for soprano, saxophone, and piano by Lori Laitman in the National Opera Center in NYC.

She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California, her Master of Music from the University Cincinnati, and her Bachelor of Music from Kyung-Won University.

The recital and masterclass are free and open to the public.
