Chattanooga Preparatory School Honors Dr. King Through Art

  • Monday, January 14, 2019

Chattanooga Preparatory School (Chattanooga Prep) announces an upcoming event, "Speak Like a King. I am the Dream."

"Speak Like a King. I am the Dream." will be a showcase of Prepster talent as the young men will honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through visual and performance arts.

The event is slated for Monday, Jan. 21 at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center beginning at 10:30 am. The event will be free and open to the community, giving Chattanooga residents the opportunity to learn more about the new charter and the venue.

“The Bessie is proud to host such talented young men as they honor Dr. Martin Luther King,” states Paula Wilkes, president of Bessie Smith Cultural Center. “We are looking forward to seeing what great work the students have accomplished with this project and to hear what they have learned in the process.”

The happening is the result of an on-going conversation between Chattanooga Prep’s Dean of Faculty and Students Chatoris Jones and Chattanooga orator Vincent Ivan Phipps of Communication VIP. The two connected to discuss how their entities could establish a partnership and found that they both wanted to provide Prepsters with an "unforgettable experience that would help them grow as leaders while developing their artistic flair."

“We always strive to create teachable moments for our boys,” said Mr. Jones. “But, we don’t want every moment to feel like your standard ‘lesson’. Speak Like a King gives us and the boys the opportunity to create those moments in a fun, new way.”

Prepsters have spent the weeks leading up to the event participating in workshops to help them prepare. Several community leaders and volunteers stepped up to help run the workshops and ensure that Prepsters have all they need to be successful on the 21st.

"Speak Like a King. I am the Dream." kicks off the charter’s event calendar for the 2019 year.

Chattanooga Prep will also host the 2nd Annual WODanooga fitness fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 26 at the Downtown YMCA and the first ever Sentinel Smoke-Off barbecue event on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the First Tennessee Pavilion, among other things.
