Millie Underwood

Millie Underwood (Mildred Cauble Underwood) left this world, surrounded by her family, to be with Jesus on December 23, 2019 after a long battle with cancer. She faced that battle with great courage, strength and fortitude.

Millie was born in Asheville, North Carolina, to John H Cauble and Ruth Boone Cauble on May 1, 1928. The family moved to Knoxville at an early age.

She was educated in the Knoxville public schools including Knoxville High School where she graduated in 1946. She met Bill Underwood, Sr., in junior high school and they became sweethearts all through school. They wed in 1946 and were married for 50 years until his death in 1997. Many of the friends made in school and Knoxville remained friends until her passing. She taught for a while at the Tennessee School for the Deaf.

As a couple, they were always active in church, social events and civic functions. Millie was a board member of the Tivoli and Memorial Auditorium and was instrumental in the refurbishing of both facilities; she was proud of the accomplishments of both venues. They were long time members of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church and she was a current member of Signal Mountain UMC.

Always a kind, giving and generous person, she made for great events with her hospitality. She always tried to please her friends and family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Even until the end, she was more concerned about those who were helping and attending to her than herself. She was the epitome of kindness and caring for family and friends.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Underwood and her grandson and his wife, David and Karen Underwood. Also, a long list of friends including the “Knoxville Girls” that still kept in touch by phone and had a wonderful reunion in May of this year. Several nephews and a niece survive her. She was preceded in death by her brother, Bob Cauble.

A special thanks to Pastor Caleb Pitkin of Signal Mtn UMC, George Culver of Hospice of Chattanooga, and Linda Austin, Susan Gooden, Kay Hodge and many others for their care and compassion.

The burial will be private. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28, at noon at Signal Mountain UMC. A gathering of friends will be held immediately following the service at the church.

Memorials in her name may be made to Signal Mtn UMC, Hospice of Chattanooga or a charity of choice.
