Lee Men Remain Undefeated With 1-0 Win Over Carson-Newman

  • Sunday, September 15, 2019
The Lee University men’s soccer team remained unbeaten and handed Carson-Newman University its first loss of the season with a 1-0 margin Saturday evening at the Lee Soccer Field. The Flames improved to 2-0-1, while the Eagles fell to 2-1-0.

“Our defense has been stellar,” said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. “We have to rely on our defense, it is the strongest part of our team. I’m not worried about the (lack of) goals, they’re going to come. We have good players.”

In three games so far this season, the Flames have tallied two goals and are yet to allow an opponent to score.

Aidan Moore scored off a long pass by goalkeeper Daniel Hrenko in the ninth minute for what became the lone goal of the match.

Both sides fired off 15 shots, but the Flames claimed a 7-5 advantage in shots placed on goal.
The Eagles tallied five corner kicks to Lee’s two. Lee was called for being offside three times with C-N being found guilty of one offense.

Lee won the time of possession. The Flames possessed the ball for 53% of the match with the majority (41%) coming in the attacking midfield. Forty percent of Carson-Newman’s possession also came in their attacking midfield.

Hrenko turned aside five shots to record his third clean sheet of the season. Bram Kaarsgaren tallied six saves for the Eagles.

The Flames hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday when they face North Georgia in Dahlonega, Ga. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
