Joe Byrl King, Sr., 97, of East Ridge, passed away peacefully on January 13, 2020.

Joe loved God fiercely, his family, his country, and gardening.  He was born in Knoxville, and grew up in Chattanooga where he graduated from Central High School in 1942.  He met the love of his life, Frances, and married in East Lake Baptist Church where they were long time members.  He was a current member of Frawley Baptist Church.

Joe was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served as a Staff Sergeant in World War II, where he was stationed in Africa and Okinawa. After returning home, he started a successful general contractor company and worked on many homes around the city.  Joe was an active member of the Lions Club for over 50 years.  Once retired, he became an avid gardener and had a green thumb.  He loved to make his famous dill pickles and jelly.  Joe never met a stranger and was always helping others, even if it was just to talk.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Horace A. King, Sr. and Velma Axley King; sister, Lucille Pardue; and brother, Horace A. King, Jr.

Cherishing memories of Joe are his wife of 77 years, Frances Henry King; son, Joe Byrl King, Jr. (Connie); daughter, Marcia Hines (Tom); grandchildren, Brandon King, Adam Hines (Megan), and Lauren Hines; great-grandchildren, Adrianna and Marissa Hines; several nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

A Celebration of Joe’s Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Thursday January 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 12:00 p.m. Joe will be laid to rest in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors at 2:30 p.m. immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Teen Challenge or the Salvation Army.

Arrangements are under the care of Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist East Chapel, 404 South Moore Rd. East Ridge, TN 37412.
